A number of people have contacted Southend News Network to ask us about the funniest ever incident where someone has fallen for a Southend News Network story. There have been a number of these in the past, but nothing will ever beat the time when the Acting Bureau Chief of the ASSOCIATED PRESS in London got in touch with little ol’ SNN for the inside scoop.

In January 2016, we ran a story saying that a young mother from Southend On Sea had been arrested for naming her baby ‘Heroin’ – a simple mistake to make as she was actually trying to name her after the Harry Potter character ‘Hermione.’ As you can see from the link at the end of this article, the story starts silly and then just gets crazier and crazier.

Unfortunately, the ‘alarm bells’ weren’t ringing for everyone reading the story at the time!

Over at the offices of the Associated Press in London, someone decided that this was a story that had legs. We received an email from their Acting Bureau Chief looking for more information.

In hindsight, we should have dragged this out for as long as possible, but in a state of sheer shock and amusement we proceeded to check whether or not he had realised that we were a spoof/satirical/fake/bollocks website. Then, the penny dropped.

As you can see, we tried to rectify the situation by asking him if they would be interested in writing a piece about Southend News Network in general, but it wasn’t to be! It’s a shame really – we could have done some great things together!

It’s an even bigger shame that their emails didn’t have that little paragraph at the bottom saying ‘the contents of this email are for the eyes of the intended recipient only – any unauthorised sharing or screenshotting will result in the Associated Press coming along and removing your thumbs with a rusty bread knife’… or words to that effect!

While we sit back and think about what could have been, it just goes to show that all sorts of people believe everything that they read on Southend News Network. Is this article you are reading now even true? You be the judge!
