As far as the official Facebook page for The Cock Inn is concerned, the truth is a little surprising!

A few days ago, we put an image on our Facebook page showing a negative review on the Facebook page of The Cock Inn – the Rochford pub and restaurant that is part of the Fayre and Square chain, owned by Greene King, etc etc etc ….. At the time, we assumed that The Cock Inn decided to ‘like’ this negative review and other similar posts because they were being arrogant, stupid, naive, or a combination of all three, and a lot of other people came to the same conclusion. However, it has now emerged that the truth is a little bit more surprising, and just like a lot of other stuff online it would seem that there is a lot more to this ‘like’ than meets the eye!

This negative review and the ‘like’ generated a fair bit of discussion on both our own pages and other local groups, and so it was only a matter of time before people started to message us directly about this. Interestingly enough, one of the messages that we received was from someone called Kevin Quinnear – Kevin is the current manager of the pub and restaurant located close to the roundabout between Hall Road and Cherry Orchard Way in Rochford. To cut a long story short, the official Facebook page of The Cock Inn is currently under the control of someone who is currently unconnected with the business at the moment, and this is something that we have verified independently. The management at Greene King are currently aware of this situation as well, but we should also make it clear that Southend News Network has had no contact from them – yet!

This is certainly an interesting situation, and it highlights a MASSIVE danger when it comes to businesses getting active on Facebook. Basically, someone has decided to go ‘rogue,’ and although Facebook has been informed of this situation they have confirmed that there is currently nothing that they can do. However, in the meantime what it DOES mean is that local people can post reviews on the Facebook page for The Cock Inn without the current manager and his staff having any means to respond, and therefore this has the potential to be very damaging to the business and something that Southend News Network wants to discourage. We have had to remove some potentially illegal/defamatory comments that this ‘official’ account has made on our own Facebook page as well, and we will continue to monitor this situation closely because, as the great Adrian Edmondson once said on Bottom, ‘we don’t want to get in the sh*t on this one!’

More importantly, if you are currently thinking that this is all some kind of ‘cop out’ by the current manager to avoid dealing with these complaints, we are also pleased to say that Kevin has pointed out that the lines of communication are very much open! He has said that he acknowledges that people have been leaving negative reviews and also that he is keen to deal with these issues, and therefore he invites customers to contact the restaurant directly by email – the address is [email protected] He also stated that they appreciate all feedback, and above all else that the whole team is passionate about making the pub and restaurant great again. The whole staffing structure is undergoing some changes at the moment to try and achieve this as quickly as possible.

For the time being, by all means go on the Facebook page for The Cock Inn, but please remember that it has been, for want of a better word, hijacked by someone who may not want the business to be shown in the best possible light. The Chief Reporter would also like to point out that no steak dinners have been provided in exchange for this article – yet!

  1. What a kind thing to do in this age of irreparable internet arguments escalating faster than anybody can stop them. You clearly aren’t the bunch of arrogant imbeciles out to ruin everybody’s lives (apparently) as your detractors would have us believe.
