A spokesperson for Essex Police has confirmed that a man has been charged with dangerous chiving in relation to an incident yesterday where a lorry tipped over, shedding its load of onions onto Eastern Avenue in Southend.
54-year-old Neville Layer-Peel, who gave his current address as Root Lane, Hullbridge, will appear before Southend Magistrates Court on 21st August. If found guilty, he could face a hefty fine or a chiving ban.
In another development, it has emerged that at 7pm this evening there were still more than 5000 unclaimed onions in the trees standing next to the crash site. Weeping locals have been sifting through the damaged onions all day, and three local greengrocers have gone into administration today after a fall in onion sales.
