Filming of the ITV soap opera Coronation Street has been SUSPENDED after the show’s famous ‘credits cat’ Nigel refused to come down from a roof on set.
At the time of going to press, counsellors have been trying to talk to the clearly distressed Nigel, but no progress has been made and filming is now on hold.
A source within the show said: ‘To be fair it was only a matter of time before he flipped out.’
‘Nigel is a classically trained actor, having taken past roles in Shakespeare productions, Rodgers and Hammerstein reviews and Kitekat commercials, but all he ever gets to do on Coronation Street is jump off a roof.’
‘He doesn’t even get his daily tummy rub from Ken Barlow anymore on account of the stroke, and he’s clearly had enough.’
‘During filming this morning, he missed his cue to jump, and we thought that one of the pigeons had got up there again as he was making a loud clicking noise.’
‘A runner went up there to take a look, and as he approached him he just started licking himself aggressively – that’s usually a sign that we need to keep away.’
‘I warned one of the producers about his erratic behaviour a few months ago and asked if we could just pre-record his part, but apparently that would be a breach of Equity guidelines.’
Nigel has played the role in Coronation Street since 2001, having originally been unsuccessful in his audition to play corner shop owner Dev Alahan.
