From early December, the first ever hard play centre in the UK will be opening in Hockley, creating 13 jobs. It will give local parents a real alternative to existing soft play locations in the area, and recent research has shown that children under 5 can benefit from hard play features in a number of different ways.
Concrete ‘n’ Glass Funky Funhouse has a brand new £2m site on the Hockley Green Industrial Estate, and throughout December and January sessions start at just £1.50 per child. The ambitious owner, Darren Laceratio, feels that the opening is long overdue.
He said, ‘Parents in Southend and the surrounding areas have told me that they are sick and tired of going to the same soft play centres with their children – week in, week out. Bouncy slides and foam-covered Disney characters are very old-fashioned in 2015, and this is where I got the idea for the first ever hard play centre of its kind, Concrete ‘n’ Glass Funky Funhouse. I took inspiration when walking past a construction site a few years ago, and I remember thinking that it would be the sort of place that an adventurous child would love to play in.’
‘While soft play venues are all about children being able to throw themselves all over the place without causing themselves grievous bodily harm, hard play is all about the thrill of dealing with real-life hazards that can easily be found in Wickes or Screwfix. The centrepiece of Concrete ‘n’ Glass Funky Funhouse is our Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Pit of Nails, and the Peppa Pig Bandsaw Fun Zone will attract people from far and wide. We have decided against including a café area for parents because it would be advisable to keep an eye on children at all times.’
