Our spoof fundraising appeal to ‘raise money for Katie Hopkins’ legal fees’ has now reached £18,500 including gift aid!
Huge thanks to everyone who has shared and donated. All the money raised is going to The Trussell Trust – a foodbank charity that works tirelessly to operate foodbanks all over the UK.
Katie’s libel case regarding the food blogger and campaigner Jack Monroe has been in the news again today as it has been announced that an appeal against the verdict has failed.
Long short, Hopkins has to cough up.
It has now also become clear that Katie inadvertently sent the fundraising link to her hundreds of thousands of followers shortly after we put it online.
She tweeted the link and accused us of running a ‘fraudulent’ page, even though it was legitimate but perhaps cheeky at the same time.
Although she deleted it pretty quickly, some eagle-eyed Twitter users managed to capture a screenshot for us.
Fortunately, when we asked her to retract that statement, she apologised – well to a certain extent anyway!

You would have thought that she would be extra-wary of chucking false allegations around on Twitter by now.
@SouthendNewsNet working on the new twitter ruling, absolutely. You have my full retraction. I am really sorry. No one could be more sorry.

It would be great to see the appeal continue to grow as it is a very worthy cause, and we are hoping to use SNN for similarly piss-takey appeals in the future.
